5 Tips for Holding a Great Barbecue

For many, Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the summer grilling season. At my house, we love to barbecue; we often have people over for holidays. Sometimes, the whole situation devolves into a mess. However, when we take the time to plan it out, it’s a little more fun.

As you get ready for some summer fun, here are 5 tips for holding a great barbecue:

1. Provide Some Entertainment

It can’t be about standing around the grill, waiting for the food. Instead, make sure there are some activities. We like to get out a football and toss it around. You can also play catch with a baseball, or get out the soccer ball for the kids to kick around. If there are a lot of kids, you can set up a scavenger hunt to keep them busy and out of your hair. Other fun lawn games include horseshoes, croquet, and badminton. Make sure there is something to do other than stand around.

2. Set Up Outside as Much as Possible

A couple years ago, we bought some inexpensive plastic tables to aid with the barbecue experience. We were tired of people having to run in and out of the house for food. Now, the food is all outside. We set it up in a shady area, and we have citronella nearby to keep the insects away. We also have plenty of folding chairs, and a nice, grassy expanse. We do also let guests know to bring their own camp chairs as well, to ensure that those who want seats have them. I prefer to sit on the grass, but I know many people like chairs. Try to be as accommodating as possible.

3. Know What Your Guests Want

There is a vegetarian in our extended family, so we always buy meatless alternatives to go with the barbecue. We also make a point to offer a variety of drinks, as well as fruit and veggie salads and trays for the more health conscious. This type of planning can mean a lot of food, though. If you find yourself worried about what to do with the left overs, send some home with your guests. We send all of the soy/tofu burgers home with the appropriate family, and others can choose to take some of the extra chips, fruit, or other food. But, having what people want to eat is key. No one has a good time if they can’t eat what they want.

4. Be a Smart Griller

Make sure you are smart about your grilling. Follow the rules of good grilling, and your food will taste better. Pre-heat your grill, gather your ingredients, and don’t be too fussy about the food as it cooks. Don’t turn it to much, and pull it off a little early and let it rest to continue cooking so you don’t overdo the food. Remember: It’s the grilled food that makes the barbecue so you want to make sure that you do it right.

5. Be Safe

It’s much more fun when you have a safe barbecue. Last year, in our excitement about Utah’s new law allowing the purchase of aerial fireworks for home display, we didn’t vet all of our choices — or follow all the precautions. One of the more unstable (but totally legal) options tipped over and shot right into the crowd. Whether you are keeping the kids safe around the grill, or avoiding firework catastrophes, make sure that you take proper safety precautions.
