Live a Better Life: Make Time for Yourself

One of the best things you can do to improve your life is to make time for yourself.

Too often, we get caught up in work, and meetings, and helping others. None of these things are bad things. You need your work/career to earn money so that you can live. Meetings and driving your kids to activities can enrich your life, and it’s always a good idea to help others.

But, at some point, you realize that you are running yourself ragged — and you feel burned out and unhappy.

Live a Better Life: Make Time for Yourself

I spent the last summer in a funk. I worked a lot. I ran from place to place. I stopped swimming in the mornings. I wasn’t working on the projects I was interested in. I really didn’t have a lot of time for me, and I began feeling very unfulfilled, not to mention experiencing a bit of weight creep again.

My husband noticed my negativity as well. “You’re not doing enough for yourself,” he told me. “You were much happier before, when you were making time for you.”

Creating “You” Time

It’s important to put together “you” time. Find time to do what you enjoy, and what helps you feel good about yourself and your place in life. You need to relax. There are a lot of studies that indicate that you should take some time to relax each day. According to studies, you can improve your physical and mental health, and even improve your productivity, if you take the time to relax on a regular basis.

But it’s not always easy to create “you” time. If you have a lot of demands on your time, it can be difficult to carve out time for you. It seems as though there are other things that take priority. From getting work done, to making sure that your kids are involved with extracurricular activities, it can seem as though there are other things that have to be done.

What it comes down to is making this time a priority. I’ve not been making time for myself a priority, so it’s been a rough go for me. What I find is that if I actually put this time first, my entire day goes better. If I start the day with swimming, or make sure that I read during my lunch break, I feel much better about things, and I get more done overall.

And, of course, I feel better.

My husband is encouraging me to start up with guitar lessons again. He pointed out that I like being busy with self-improvement projects. When I don’t have time to improve myself, I feel unsatisfied. Just keeping up with my work, helping around the house, and taking care of my son really isn’t enough for my life. These are things that I enjoy, and think are important, but they don’t offer me a complete life. In order to be totally fulfilled, I need “me” time that allows me to read, or swim, or play music. I like performing service, and I enjoy supporting my husband and my son in their various activities. But you can’t make it all about others all the time.

You do need to make time for yourself if you want to live a rich, full life. This doesn’t mean neglecting others, of course, but you do need to strike a balance and look for meaningful activities to enjoy. Remember to make you a priority, and you’ll be amazed at how much more you enjoy your life. You might even have more time for everything else when you take care of you first.
