Many of us have dreams and goals that just don’t seem to be fulfilled. Sometimes we wish and wait, without making a plan. Other times we procrastinate, putting off what we need to do until “some day.” But what if you were ready to start living now? This doesn’t mean abandoning all of your responsibilities and riding off into the sunset. Rather, it’s more about deciding what you want from life, improving your attitude, and looking for ways to improve the way you live right now. If you are looking for ways to make a positive start, here are some ideas:
Figure Out What You Want Your Life to Look Like
First of all, you have to decide what’s important to you, and what you want your life to look like. Do you wish you had more time to spend with family? Would making a little more money be helpful in reaching your goals? Is service to others an important part of your personality? You really need to take a step back and decide what you want from life. Think about how you can make that happen, while still fulfilling your commitments. You don’t have to accomplish your dream tomorrow, but you should have an idea of where you are headed. Then, you can start planning.
Create a Plan to Help You Along Your Way
Really, I want more energy, and I want to be able to travel with my family, while maintaining my service in my church congregation. I know that in order to improve my energy level, I need to exercise and eat right. Obviously, I can’t just wake up tomorrow, deny myself all of my favorite treats, and work out for an hour. That sort of pace is unsustainable — and miserable. Instead, I’ve eased into an exercise routine, and I slowly added more healthy foods to my diet, while still keeping room in my life for chocolate. I have more energy, and I’m more productive. As for travel, we take mini trips and staycations, and visit my husband’s family in New York. We’re slowly taking steps, though, so that our work schedules and income streams will provide us the ability to travel more in the future.
Your goals and your plans have to be realistic and achievable. The important thing is to start now, and take small steps toward living the life you want. Simple pleasures can go a long way toward keeping you going.
Associate with Positive People
Surround yourself with people who enjoy living, and who are positive. As you work toward improving your own positivity and living your life, you want to associate with those who are supportive, and enjoying their own lives. Don’t bother yourself with arguing about unimportant things, and let others win. Does someone else need to prove something? No need to argue or compete. Let him or her “win” while you focus your energies on positive changes in your life. Part of living your life the way you want is letting go of negativity, and refusing to be drawn into situations and relationships that leave you drained.
Gratitude for what you already have is essential. There’s nothing wrong with striving for a better life, or working to change your situation. However, you should always be mindful of what you have now. It’s possible to be content now, with your efforts to improve, while still actively transforming your life. Take the time to be grateful, and remember to express gratitude to those around you — especially your closest loved ones.
As you look for ways to improve your life, and increase your positivity, you will find that you can change the way you do things. Decide what’s important to you, and then empower yourself to begin the journey toward the life you want to live.
