Getting your work done each day is often a product of being organized. Your work space should allow you to get to the items that you need without having to wade through much clutter and with a level of comfort that suits your personality. Almost everyone could stand to give their office space a little face lift that will allow them to work better and more comfortably each and every day.
10 Tips to Organize Office Space
Reconsider Your Desk – Your desk is not just a piece of furniture. It is the hub of your working life and should be tailored to your physical needs. Make sure that yours fits with the way you work and your personal physicality. Carefully consider different options based on your real needs and not just aesthetic qualities.
Throw Away Non-Essentials - Consider your day to day activities and the items in your office that you actually use. You will probably find that there are loads of items that you never use, those things should be gotten rid of immediately. Only keep the items which you use regularly and you will find it is easier to organize and to maintain.
Evaluate With A Photo – We have all seen before and after shots of home makeover projects. Do the same with your office makeover, only do not settle for the first ‘after’ shot. Instead, look carefully at that picture to see if there are places you can further de-clutter and organize.
Maintain Your Space – If you want to have a clutter free and organized space you will have to dedicate yourself to daily maintenance. If you take a few minutes at the end of each work day to clean up your office and put things away you will find that it stays organized and you do not wind up with any non-essential items cluttering your space.
Organize Drawers – Each drawer in your office should be neat and orderly. They should also be located in order of importance with those drawers containing the items you use the most located nearest your reach with your dominant hand. This will not only keep your office neat and organized but will also save time.
Build A Desktop Storage System – Those circular pencil organizers sold at office supply stores are nice, but might not be perfect for your needs. Using simple PVC pipe cut to various sizes you can glue one together that has the right size spaces for the items you needs without any wasted space.
Divide Your Bookshelves – If your office contains a shelf of media you can make it easier to access by using inexpensive dividers. That way when you need a specific item it will be easy for you to locate and to replace which saves loads of time.
Develop A File System – Your files do not have to be alphabetic or chronological, they just have to work for you and be easy to follow. You cannot have a successful organized office with files that are simply lumped in a box. Come up with a system that makes sense for you and your business and stick to it.
Have A Place For Everything – As you get new items or find that there are items regularly on your desk create a space for them to live. This might mean a drawer for chords for your hand held devices or a cork board for business cards. As things come up, re-evaluate your space so that you have a dedicated spot for everything.
Know When To Stop – While being organized is very important it is equally important that you do not go overboard. If you find that you are spending too much time on organization and not enough on work then it is time to pull back and realize that what you have already done is probably enough.
Having a well thought out and organized office is essential to productivity. You will find that once your space is organized your thoughts and work will also be organized.
